Students write a poem using at least five poetic and literary devices to add to the overall effect of the poem. After composing the poem, students write an essay explaining their choice of devices and the ways in which they intended to create certain effects in their poem.
Write an original poem - it could be about a subject important to you, or something completely frivolous. It could be serious, emotional, funny, or dramatic. It could be happy, or sad, or a combination of any of the above. It does not have to rhyme.
Think carefully about the poetic and literary devices you want to include, using at least five to contribute to the overall effect of your poem. Devices you might use include: hyperbole, onomatopoeia, personification, caesura, simile, metaphor, oxymoron, and imagery. At least two of these should be structural devices, such as using a rhyme scheme or creating a specific rhythm in your poem.
Once you have finished your poem, write an approximately 500 word essay that explains your choices and how you intended to create certain effects for your reader using your chosen poetic and literary devices.
